Catherine Smith was born in Queensland in 1961, and is a graduate of the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Brisbane College of Advanced Education, James Cook University, Victoria University, and Deakin University.

She was formerly a primary school teacher with a post-graduate academic focus on education, training and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. She has also served with the Australian Defence Force. She is part of an owner-builder project to erect a strawbale house and live sustainably off-grid.

Her motivation for this biographical work took shape in 2003. Among the youngest of 38 first cousins, she listened to stories that circulated from within the extended family and met strangers on whom her grandparents had left a lasting impression. The Zammit story holds significance for the history of North Queensland and fills an important gap in pre-WW1 European migration.
